5 ways technology can help you get in shape

January6

The age-old new years resolution:  get in shape and lose weight.

UGH!!!!!!

So not a fun option, not a fun new years resolution.  But inevitable.  Like taxes.

Me, being a bit of a technophile, have discovered and actively sought out ways in which I can indulge in my techiness and do the 2 abhorrent resolutions mentioned above.

1. Couch to 5K app on my iPhone.  As of today I am 4 runs off of the couch.

2. Nike+ sensor that goes on my running shoes and interacts with the Nike+ app on my iPhone.  It is a pedometer, and goal setter, a record keeper, and the most important part of it is the Power Song option.

3. Wii fit.  Cheesy I know, but my sore glutes don’t lie (or maybe I am just that much out of shape).  Either way it is fun and AWESOME!!!

4. Weight Watchers app for iPhone.  Finally!!!! That’s all I have to say about that. If you are not part of Weight Watchers, check out the LoseIt app.

5. Facebook.  I have been more encouraged by other girlfriends in the same situation I find myself in.  Not enough time to get together with girlfriends to commiserate or work out together, but enough time to encourage each other throughout the day via comments on Facebook.  Plus the Nike+ is embarrassingly posting my runs and I haven’t figured out how to make them stop it.  But the side benefit of this is that I get lots of encouraging notes when it does post which makes me happy and slightly more motivated.

Please weigh in on other ways in which technology has been helping you stay fit.

Resolving to be present

January5

This life is interesting.  We only have, in eternities scope, but a few moments of time to be, to live, to dream, to screw up massively, to be forgiven and to forgive, to love dramatically and passively, to be lazy and to bound over tall buildings.  We are nothing without our loves big and little.  I love making coffee in the morning and my kids.  I hate having to get out of bed in the morning.  I hate going to bed a night.  I love the feeling right before I get out of bed when I am all comfy and cozy.  I love finding stupid movies that totally suck me in.  I watched Fired Up last night.  Dumb and brilliant.  Brilliant in the sense that my mind completely turned off, and it was a very guilty pleasure.  The same kind of pleasure I get from watching Gossip Girl, or reading a stupid book.

So much of my life is based around intentionality.  Frivolity makes me happy in it’s pointlessness.

Playlist for this afternoon:

Colors 2 – Leo
Single Ladies – Beyonce
Hey, Soul Sister – Train
Death – White lies
I’m Yours – Jason Mraz
Gifted – NASA
Just Dance – Lady Gaga
Wonderful – Gary Go
Falling Down – Space Cowboys

Use Somebody – Kings of Leon

Packing tips for the holidays

December16

I hate packing.  And now I am packing for 4 people. Generally Jon packs for himself.  But phew, when planning 2 plane trips, 3 kids, a week away from home, napping schedules, mealtimes, not to mention Christmas gifts that need transporting there and back, it becomes exhausting.  So here are five tips for packing for the holidays.

1. Ship the Christmas gifts ahead of time. And ship the ones received at your destination back.  Then you don’t have to worry about lugging them around in the airport and hoping they arrive.

2. Make a list. Kind of goes without saying.  But I have a general packing list with additional blank spaces for items specific to the trip saved on my computer and when I start packing I print out 2.  One to use when packing here and the other to use at the end of the trip when packing up to come home, to make sure I didn’t forget anything.  This also allows me to sleep sounder the night before the trip, b/c my mind isn’t spinning trying to remember everything I need to make sure I get in the morning.

3. Limit the amount of crap you bring. This was hard at the beginning of having kids, but now, I have it down to a science.  If I can borrow a pack-n-play, car seat, stroller, or some kind of booster I will.  Beg, borrow, and steal is my motto. Not really, but kind of.  Don’t bring all of their toys, just a few favorite things.  If you child has a favorite pillow, just bring the pillow case and put it on another pillow.

4. Buy necessities at your destination. I buy the following things at my destination:  diapers, food, wipes, disposable bibs.  It cuts down on using valuable packing space.

5. Give yourself plenty of time to pack. Don’t pack the morning of, the kids are going to be nutty, you will be nutty, plus you still have to travel that day, and really you should start packing a few days ahead of time to make sure you are clear headed when making decisions about what to bring.

And always remember, generally you can buy whatever you need wherever you are going if you forget something.  Breathe and have a fabulous adventure.
